The Only Way to be Safe

The Five Minute Friday word is safe.

“I can’t guarantee you won’t get it.” I told my fearful child who wanted to be assured of an absolute—and positive—outcome. “I don’t have control over it. But, you can . . .” I listed out reasonable safeguards.

Disease, parasites, injury and all kinds of harm come with living in this world. We don’t often think about it until it hits us in the face.

A few years ago, I hadn’t thought about lice until I was dealing with it. Last year, my gallbladder, apparently, was a ticking time bomb. I didn’t know until the pain struck.

We all want to orchestrate our lives to avoid pain, but that isn’t going to happen on this side of eternity.

How can we sleep at night without spinning solutions late into the night?

One thing I know: God is the only one who can keep anyone safe. Safety is more about position of heart, resting in his sovereignty, than a man-made plan.

Where do you position your heart and mind when you feel unsafe?

My first reaction to unsafe feelings is often problem solving. I do research and look to what I can do to make my world feel safer. What I want to do instead is to pray first. Yes, I want to seek information and walk in wisdom, but aligning myself to God is a better first decision.

When I focus on who God is, I have a better chance at resting in him.

I agree, it’s easy to look for safety in controlling circumstances and outcomes (I do that far too much) but the only place we can really find safety we can rely on is in God.

I don’t think I’m controlling until life spins uncomfortably out of control. Then I’m faced with reality—I was never truly in control. Then I turn to the One who is in control of it all.

Hello Cheryl. So glad to be joining you from Five Minute Friday. I was attracted to your post, because of the scripture you chose. That verse literally kept me from fear when I was younger and staying alone, especially at night. It gave me peace in what was naturally to me an uncomfortably fearful situation, as I realized as you stated, that “God is the only One who can keep anyone safe”.

It’s so true that we cannot live avoiding pain and trouble in this life, yet equally true that through it all, we can trust the One who keeps us safe.

Thank-you for writing these words of peace and truth.
