The Key to Moving Forward: Forget

The Five Minute Friday word for today is forget.

When I saw the word, I immediately thought of Philippians 3 and remembered that this life is more than the here and now of life. More than what happened in the past. More than my today. There is an eternity ahead. I want to press forward–focusing on that.

The Key to Moving Forward: Forget

“I don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.” ‭‭Philippians‬ ‭3:12-14‬ ‭NLT‬‬

The mind is amazing. I can forget where I put my keys. Forget about a meeting. Forget. Forget. Forget. I want to kick myself. How can I forget? Forgetting can be such a pain.

But when I do want to forget…a painful memory from childhood…the stinging words of a friend…the time I didn't pass the test…when I didn't get the job…when I screwed up and everything I imagined to be terrible…happened. Those things, I remember. I have a hard time forgetting the pain. Feeling stupid. Wanting and wishing I had not been there or I had been a different person at the time.

But if I am to move forward. Move on to a new chapter in my life. One in which I am where I want to be and am the person I don't regret being. I have to forget the past and press forward to the future.

Forget. Not like really forget. Instead. I don't dwell on the past. I replace those thoughts with truth about the situation. And I move forward.

We used the very same verse for this word prompt 🙂 May we not forget our identity in Christ but forget that which hinders us from living in the fullness of all He has for us. Glad to have stopped here from #FMF. Blessings!
