Reading Help with b and d
It is normal for early readers to have trouble distinguishing between “b” and “d” while reading. The letters look the same except they are facing opposite directions. Here is one way I am helping my new reader to recognize the difference between these two letters:
- Look at the word and see if it has a “b” or “d.” (Some words have both letters. If so, do this process of pointing for each time the letter appears in the word.)
- Point to the letter on the picture that matches the one in the word.
- Say the letter sound. (This step can be skipped if the reader is confident in the letter sounds.)
- Say the word.
What have you found helpful in distinguishing these letters?
