Proverbs 13:16 Wise people think

Proverbs 13:16

Proverbs 13:16

“Wise people think before they act; fools don’t—and even brag about their foolishness.” ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭13:16‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Wise people think—fools don't. To be wise, one must think about what to say and what to do before plunging ahead. It's more than planning, although that may be part of the process. Wise people take time to consider whether or not a particular word or action is a good idea. This is what happens before plans are made.

Fools don't think. They let whatever thoughts they have tumble out without a thought. They do what comes natural and obey what their impulses dictate. Not only is there no plan, there is no consideration as to whether or not something is good. The road ahead is not important to a fool, “now” is all that matters.

Children fall into the fool camp mostly because of inexperience and because their brains are developing. (For young children, they have no concept of time whatsoever. So thinking about what is down the road is a rediculous thought—what's a road?) Being naive is not a sin. But it is sad when a child, or an adult, chooses to stay in their simplemindedness.

One step towards being a wise thinker instead of a fool

Pause. It sounds easy, but pausing takes incredible amounts of self control. Taking a moment—which could be a deep, long breath—to think before speaking or reacting will save you from heartache. Some have suggested counting to 10. Depending on the situation, a longer pause is needed—like a major life change kind of decision.

What is you focus for this week?

Decide what your focus will be this week. Will you focus on words or actions? (Ultimately, it is good to think before any kind of action, word or deed, before plunging ahead. It is better to focus on one area and gain some success than to try to tackle too much at once.)

I am not writing about this because I have achieved this wise thinking. I am writing because Proverbs is true, and I want to grow in wisdom. I am often one who speaks first and then talks later. I tend to be more cautious with what I do, so focusing on the tongue is good for me. If you are slower to talk but quick to take action before thinking, you might want to focus on that first.

Great post! Pausing before speaking is a great idea. I need to do that more before I react to my children when they push my buttons. 🙂 Blessings to you today!

Pausing before responding to button-pushing children is a goal of mine too.

      Thanks for visiting.
