Nap and Bedtime Routine

Sleeping babyA sleep routine is good for everyone. Children need to be given a routine. About.com has some good ideas to consider about bedtime routines. Here is my general nap and bedtime routine for my 2-year old, BabyCakes.

  1. Change diaper (and into PJ’s if at night)
  2. Brush teeth (She gets a turn to brush, and I get a turn to brush.)
  3. Read a story (She has been wanting to “read” to me recently.)
  4. Ba-Ba Little Sheep song
  5. Jesus Loves Me (or Jesus Loves You) song
  6. Pray
  7. Kisses and hugs, and goodnight.

After I say goodnight, I leave the room. We have been doing this routine for some time, and she associates sleep with these activities. Today, she woke up in the middle of her nap after falling out of bed–poor thing. I went up, put her back in bed and sang the songs. It was cute watching her eyes getting heavier with each verse. She went back to bed.

What do you put in your nap and bedtime routine? Keep it short and predictable, it will make life easier for you and your little one.
