Memorial Day: We honor you

Memorial Day
I wrote this Memorial Day poem as I reflected on the men and women who laid down their lives in service to our country.  And to the families who gave up sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, husbands and wives, mothers and fathers, thank you.

Memorial Day

Did you know when you signed the papers,

when you said the oath,

that you’d lay down your life?

Did you know it then?

Or did you wrap the thoughts with a cloak of honor and pride,

And tuck possibility into a place called “come what may”?

When the time came,

did courage rise in you?

Or was courage as natural to you as putting on your uniform.

Did the honor code pulse through your veins,

and the unity of being on mission pump your heart?

For the sacrifice you made to serve, thank you.

For facing fear and death, thank you.

By immortalizing you in our thoughts,

and for generations to come,

we honor you.

The History of Memorial Day

Originally called Decoration Day, Memorial Day became an official federal holiday in 1971. Not to be confused with Veteran’s Day, this holiday remembers those who lost their lives in service. Learn more at history.com here and here.
