Listen to Yourself

The Five Minute Friday word is listen. This picture reminds me of the path of choices we face every day. We take one step at a time. Listening is one choice.

Listen to Yourself

“It’s going to be a bad day.” I can hear the words flow out of my mouth without thinking.

“I’m never going to do better.” My child cries out discouraged.

The thoughts come, but do we listen to the words we say–the words we say outloud and the words we say in our hearts. If we took the time to listen, we might be able to change the direction of our moment, our day, our life.

If I listened to my “bad day” words, I’d know I couldn’t possibly know it was going to be a bad day. I can’t predict the future. But having “bad day” as my mantra almost ensures my bad day to happen. I will be self focused. I will be looking for the bad.

If my child listened to the words of discouragement and asked for help instead of determining his future, there could be a change. “Never” is a word that is rarely true, but the word is powerful. It’s akin to “always.”

Have you used words to entrap yourself? Listen to yourself. It might just change your day.

If you listened to yourself with the ears of a loving friend, what would you tell yourself today?

It’s easy to be kind and patient with a friend and easier to be harsh with ourselves. What would happen if you listened and responded to yourself as a friend? Even better, what words would God have for you? (With God, don’t get caught up in recreating him in your voice. Let him speak for himself from his word, the Bible.)

Share your story.

Are these words encouraging to you? Share.

Five Minute Friday

1. Write for 5 minutes flat – no editing, no over thinking, no backtracking.

2. Link back here and invite others to join in.

3. And then absolutely, no ifs, ands or buts about it, you need to visit the person who linked up before you and encourage them in their comments. Seriously. That is, like, the rule. And the fun. And the heart of this community.

My favorite line was “If you listened to yourself with the ears of a loving friend, what would you tell yourself today?”
I think we are all so harsh and difficult with ourselves, we are our biggest enemy. We are so cruel to us and never would we allow a friend to talk to us like this. Thank you for this gentle reminder to love and listen to your words to you.

I’m so glad you can relate. It’s crazy how we can beat ourselves up and turn around and have encouraging words for a friend.
