Kid Quotes: 17 years of marriage

Kids say shocking, funny, sweet, wonderful, insightful, deep things. I am often caught off guard when the phrase is uttered, but I am thankful for the ways I am inspired or, quite often, amused by their words. I have decided to share a quote each week. If you have a good quote to share, please do so in the comments.

17 years of marriage

Bear (8) – Happy 17 years of not getting divorced.

BabyCakes (3) – Wow! I want you to get me married, Mommy.

BunBun (10) – You've been married half as long as you've had children. You've had 18 more years of children than you've had of marriage. (I asked her how this is true.) You add up all our ages-14, 10, 8, 3- 14 plus 3 is 17. And 8 plus 10 is 18. You add those numbers together to get 35. And subtract 17. You get 18.

My teenager (14) – Wow. Time flies when you're having fun.

This is the answer I got after I told each of my children that Dad and I have been married for 17 years today. Bear's perspective surprised me. But it's true, we have chosen to stick together for all those years and not get divorced. I told BabyCakes I could get her married in about 17 years. Although it took me a moment to figure out BunBun's equation, it's true that we have 35 years of combined kid experience. It's funny that my 3 year old and 14 year old both had the same initial response.

Even though it sounds negative at first, Bear’s comment really makes a positive statement. It’s not every couple that lasts this long. Glad we have!

      Yes, I am glad too.
