God Quotes: Healing for Your Body

Healing for Your Body

Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the LORD and turn away from evil. Then you will have healing for your body and strength for your bones. (‭Proverbs‬ ‭3‬:‭7-8‬ NLT)

Have you ever considered the impact of your relationship with God and your health? We are people with a physical body, but we are more than just a body. We have our mind and emotions, and we have a soul. Each part of us—body, mind, soul—make us who we are. And each part interacts with the other.

If you don’t think one part affects the other, try neglecting one part and take note on how it influences (or doesn’t influence) how that other part functions. Stay up all night and see how patient you feel when a little child dumps a box of cereal on the floor. See how that patience maintains throughout the day. How well do you pay attention and function mentally. The body certainly affects the emotions and the mind. Does it affect the spirit too? Evaluating that might be harder to distinguish for some. I know, for me, when I am exhausted, I can succumb to discouragement. Discouragement is an emotion, and yet a connected relationship with God knows what to do with discouragement. Parsing out one part of us from the other isn’t always easy. Sometimes it is difficult to figure out which part of us is pressing the other part out of whack. That is why it is important to nourish our whole being.

I find this passage interesting. There is a clear statement between health and one’s relationship with the Lord. I don’t believe that a person who has an intimate relationship with God is also free from all illness. Illness is a reality from living in a fallen world. But a person who fears the LORD and turns from evil will make different choices from those who don’t. Those choices do affect the body (and the mind and the emotions).

A healthy relationship with God will:

  • Ease distressed emotions because God can give peace even in situations that are normally stressful

You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you! (‭Isaiah‬ ‭26‬:‭3‬ NLT)

  • Fill a person with the fruit of the Spirit (many of the facets of the fruit of the Spirit are emotions)

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! (‭Galatians‬ ‭5‬:‭22-23‬ NLT)

  • Direct a person’s thoughts (notice peace is there again)

And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you. (‭Philippians‬ ‭4‬:‭8-9‬ NLT)

  • Affect a person’s choices concerning his (or her) body

Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body. (‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭6‬:‭19-20‬ NLT)

The closer a person grows in relationship with God, the better the overall health. Not perfect physical health. Not perfect emotional health. There is better health. While I believe there is a great deal of impact on the choices we make concerning our health, there is a spiritual element that cannot be contained to a checklist or goals for the year.

In a deepening relationship with God, an invitation to Him is made to allow Him to work. And when God gets involved, He can touch parts of our body, mind, and spirit we cannot. He can heal parts of us we don’t realize are hurting and destroying us. This is yet another reason I want to rest in Him.
