God Quotes: God Owes Me

Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! “Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?” “Who has ever given to God, that God should repay them?” For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen. (Romans 11:33-36 NIV)

God Owes Me

Have you ever thought that? Maybe not in those terms. Maybe it has come in other thoughts like:

  • If I pray enough, have faith enough, God will…
  • I sacrificed my money, my career, my life, so God will…
  • If I am good (in some particular way), God will…

What is it that God is obligated to do if we do what we are supposed to do? What does God owe me?

God Owes Me Nothing

What has a person done so that God is indebted to Him? There is no sacrifice a person can make whose resources don't originate with God. So that career that was sacrificed? That came from God. The money and time and service? They are all resources that came from God. Our very life and breath originated from God. The day we have is a gift He has given out of His good pleasure. All the goodness we enjoy is from God.

God Owns Me

When my life has shifted away from my way, I come face to face with my own selfishness. I can sing all the songs about the greatness of God when life runs smoothly. I can have a good attitude. I can obey God's word. Until. Life turns into a direction I don't like, don't prefer, don't understand. And I am reminded that this whole life I am living is not about me, my wants, and my way.

I am reminded that I not only have a Creator (who made me) but also a Redeemer (who bought me). He owns me twice. He is entitled to all of my life. He, because He owns me, can direct my path in any direction He chooses. And if that path is a road of suffering, His determination to bring about His own glory in my suffering is right.

God's Primary Aim

God's primary aim is not my health, wealth, and happiness. When I enjoy any of these realities in my life–of which, if I am honest, I have enjoyed much health, wealth, and happiness–it is an expression of God's loving kindness. When sickness comes, when there is no money, and when life is flat out hard, God is not primarily looking for ways to return the health, wealth, and happiness. God is primarily bringing about His glory. His glory is good through and through. We are the beneficiaries of His glory being manifested. Some of that benefit is not in the here and now. Some of it is in the present. When it is not clear how His glory is good, especially when life is in the midst of pain, we must return our thoughts to Whose we are. We belong to Him. He is a good and loving God. And while He doesn't owe me, He is generous towards me.

How have you seen God's generous hand directed toward you in the midst of suffering?

How has He given grace and strength for the moment? Where as has He been merciful and kind?
