God Quotes: A Good Plan For God’s Masterpiece

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. (Ephesians 2:10 NLT)

A Good Plan For God's Masterpiece

Masterpiece. Me? I hear that and get all focused. On me. I think this is wonderful because it raises the value. Of me. Like a masterpiece painting that everyone ooh's and ah's over. It doesn't take much for me to turn the whole point of life to be about me. I'd like to think that I am others focused, and want to be, but my natural inclination is selfish. I try to hide my selfishness as much as possible. But sometimes when I am giving or doing for others, my motivation is about me. It makes me feel better. It makes me look better. I don't think I'm unique in this. (If I am the only one, there isn't too much I can do about that. But I doubt selfishness is a unique-to-me trait.)

This passage empasizes a good plan for God's masterpiece. It's not about me it's about him. He made me (and is re-making me) so I can do good things. These good things are not an afterthought. These good things are part of the plan. Part of the plan? Yes. It it was a “long ago” plan. Woe. Let that sink in.

So, when I am navel gazing about my life and want to give in or give up, I have to remember there is a plan. He has planned good that I am made–masterfully made–to do. I better dig in and go at it. He planned for me to do it. Thankfully, he is the one working in that ol' selfish part of me that wants it to be about me so I can genuinely do good for him. And if it is for him, I win out too. Weird isn't it? Taking the focus off of me will, in fact, be total good for me too. At least in eternity. Today might be really, really hard. But those plans of God's, those good plans, are NOT just about the blink of time that is this life, it's about eternity.

If eternity weren't in the picture, being good wouldn't be worth it for me. I'd focus on being good for the people I cared about and being nice to people who were nice to me. But since eternity is in view, there is more at stake. My today touches eternity. The choices I make to bend my will to God's makes an incredible deposit in eternity. When I choose to thank God–especially through the tears–it counts.

Those good things he planned for me to do are opportunities to join in with a bigger picture than I can imagine. The effects are beyond what I can see. How do I know this? Because God is the one who used something as simple as a word to create the universe. He can certainly make me into a masterpiece and take that little me and raise me up to do good.

Good friends of mine, please redirect me to this when I need it. These words sound great at the top of the mountain but are hard to see in the valley.

What is your response to this passage?

Masterpiece of God, go do the good things he planned.
