God Quotes: 10 Truths from Numbers 6

Numbers 6:24-26

10 Truths from Numbers 6:24-26

“May the LORD bless you and protect you. May the LORD smile on you and be gracious to you. May the LORD show you his favor and give you his peace.” Numbers‬ ‭6:24-26‬ ‭NLT‬‬

10 observations:

  1. “May the LORD” is the beginning of each verse. The LORD is the source. If I forget God is my source, I will be short-changed by a cheaper source.
  2. Bless. This word is used 422 times in the NLT. I think of the beatitudes in Matthew‬ ‭5:3-12‬ ‭NLT‬‬. A good look at the beatitudes redefines bless. Blessed are the meek, poor, mourning, humble. In all of these (and the others mentioned in this passage), God is their source of life and joy.
  3. Protect. I think of Paul who used this word protect in a way I don’t fully grasp. “But God has protected me right up to this present time so I can testify to everyone, from the least to the greatest. I teach nothing except what the prophets and Moses said would happen—”Acts of the Apostles‬ ‭26:22‬ ‭NLT‬‬. Paul lived the antithesis of an easy life. When I think about protection, I immediately think about smooth sailing—no hardship, because I was “protected.” Then I remember that Paul lived a life on mission. His goal was to preach the Gospel. For him, living meant more opportunity to tell others about Jesus. He was confident of God’s goodness in the midst of hardship and didn’t see difficulties in life as a lack of protection.
  4. Smile on you. This is a life that is filled with choices pleasing to the Lord. When my children are making good choices, I find myself smiling. When I am living a life pleasing to God, walking in Him, is it possible that God smiles? May He smile as I walk in obedience to Him.
  5. Be gracious to you. In some translations and verses, this word “gracious” is translated as mercy. In the NASB, gracious (the same word as is used in the Numbers 6 passage) is used 31 times. These are prayers for hard times. “Turn to me and be gracious to me, For I am lonely and afflicted.” ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭25:16‬ ‭NASB‬‬. When the heart aches, we need God’s grace. Help me, I need your grace is repeated. You don’t always know what someone is going through, you can always pray for God to be gracious to them.
  6. Show you his favor. Favor is similar to the idea of blessing. It speaks of success, but not outside of God’s good pleasure. Some other translations use the phrase “The LORD lift up His countenance on you” instead of “show you hiss favor.” Imagine doing what you do in God’s presence. (You really are, but sometimes it’s good to remember it.) In doing what you do, for the Lord, may you be successful.
  7. Give you his peace. This is the word “shalom.” Peace is not at war. Some of the biggest battles are in the mind and heart. God gives peace to those whose minds are on Him.”You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!” ‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭26:3‬ ‭NLT‬‬. When the war rages within (or around you), turn your focus to God and pray, pray, pray.
  8. I can’t help but think of this beautiful rendition by John Rutter. Music is an excellent way to meditate on scripture.
  9. Here are the two verses before this prayer. “Then the LORD said to Moses, “Tell Aaron and his sons to bless the people of Israel with this special blessing:” ‭‭Numbers‬ ‭6:22-23‬ ‭NLT‬‬. Imagine praying this prayer over a loved one, like your children.
  10. Imagine praying this for someone you don’t love. When I was in college, I remember a mentor suggesting I pray blessing for someone I wasn’t getting along with. Praying that good would come into this person’s life was exactly the opposite of what I felt like doing, but I did. In time, we became friends. God worked in a way I never imagined.

Pray to Him now

Jesus, I want your blessing and protection. I want your grace and for your smile. I want favor and peace. I want all of those things. Help me to trust your hand. I know the road ahead is not going to be filled with ease if I am following you. Help me to remember this journey is about Your glory and not mine. It is about Your purposes and not my will. Help me to remember and not get lost in everyday “stuff” that fills my days. Help me to fix my eyes on you. I am lost without you. In Jesus’ name, amen.
