42 Thankful Birthday Thoughts

I'm not a naturally thankful person. It's not that I am not thankful about anything. It is that the pursuit of thankfulness is a pursuit for me. Maybe that is true for many. I believe thankfulness is important. In light of that, I am listing 42 thankful thoughts for my 42nd birthday.

42 Thankful Birthday Thoughts

  1. I woke up this morning. The older I get, I realize that it is a gift.
  2. I had a car with gas to get to the pharmacy.
  3. I was able to get medicine for my oldest son.
  4. My son only had a mild concussion from the falling tree branch this weekend. I know it could have been a worse injury.
  5. The ER trip revealed an acute sinusitis. We would not have known without the scan.
  6. Many people flexed to cover my teaching and coaching responsibilities so I could stay home with my son.
  7. My son progressively felt better throughout the day.
  8. I have the books and materials I need to teach my kids at home.
  9. My daughter made oatmeal while I was out getting medicine.
  10. I have a washing machine and dryer to clean our clothes.
  11. We had yummy leftovers to eat for lunch making it an easy lunch prep.
  12. Apart from the mishap from the weekend, I have four healthy children.
  13. My husband is a hard working man.
  14. My husband has a job that meets our needs.
  15. My kids genuinely love each other. (We don't love perfectly, but we love from the heart.)
  16. My kids help by doing chores around the house. (Sometimes I forget how incredibly helpful they are.)
  17. We have helpful technology that makes life easier. Evernote helped me avoid printing. (I am not feeling thankful for the printer right now, but am thankful for the Evernote workaround.)
  18. We have fun technology that is enjoyable. (Netflix, sometimes you give us a needed break.)
  19. FaceBook let me see countless birthday wishes. So many people wrote. {blush}
  20. Friends called to check on my son because they heard he was hurt.
  21. One of his teachers called to check on him too.
  22. My big brother called to wish me a happy birthday and to make me laugh.
  23. One friend emailed me a wonderful birthday email.
  24. One friend called just because. She is a faithful friend.
  25. Many friends texted me to wish me well and check on my son.
  26. My kids all love reading, and we enjoyed some more pages of Johnny Tremain.
  27. BunBun, Bear, and I met our goal of running two miles today.
  28. I got to have a soak in the tub. I can't think of the last time I've had that luxury.
  29. We got to see the ISS fly over us tonight. It was fun being outside looking up at the night sky together imagining what it must be like to be orbiting the earth.
  30. My kids gifted me with a handwritten birthday newspaper and comic.
  31. My husband grilled for dinner.
  32. My husband grilled a steak for me for dinner.
  33. My husband bought a little tirimisu dessert for me.
  34. My kids got to enjoy cupcakes.
  35. Seeing them smile in frosting and cake-filled euphoria was a treasure.
  36. We were all together, all six of us, for dinner. As my oldest gets older, I realize these days of all six of us together won't be like this forever.
  37. My youngest gave me a great birthday hug and kiss (her gift to me).
  38. I have some Target money to spend.
  39. I have some Starbucks money to spend.
  40. I have some dark chocolate to enjoy at some later time.
  41. I got to enjoy a walk alone with my husband on a nice evening.
  42. I have a full house. They each fill my heart in ways only they can.

Looking at this list, I am staring at the reality of a very good life.

In some ways, I think I have just started. There is so much for which to be thankful. I can think of more than just 42. (Like I got to take a nap today.) I wondered, at first, if I could list 42. It flowed easily once I started to think about it.

My day didn't start with overflowing thoughts of thankfulness. Quite the opposite. I had an ER hangover. My head hurt, and I wanted to have a birthday do-over. The day had a bumpy beginning, but it got better as the day progressed. Some of it got better because it went “my way.” The other reason it got better was because I spent some time thinking about thankfulness. There is no escaping it. If you pursue thankfulness, the day automatically gets better. (Hum. Note to self: Start listing the thankful thoughts earlier in the day.)

For those of you who are part of my thankful birthday thoughts, I do truly appreciate how you contributed to making 42 a thankful birthday.

It doesn't have to be your birthday, but what are your thankful thoughts?

Can you list thankful thoughts equal to your age? This was a fun exercise for me. If you do list your own, please share in the comments below.
